Abstract

Introduction: Endophthalmitis is defined as a serious infection that occurs inside the eye, which can lead to significant complications and, unfortunately, presents a considerable risk of developing severe and permanent visual sequelae. There are basically two different categories of endophthalmitis, which are very relevant in the field of ophthalmology. The first category, known as endogenous endophthalmitis, occurs when microorganisms manage to enter the eye through the bloodstream, and this generally originates from an infectious focus found in another part of the body. On the other hand, the second category is called exogenous endophthalmitis, and this occurs when microorganisms penetrate the inside of the eye through a wound or injury. This type of endophthalmitis can arise as a result of an intraocular surgical procedure or as a consequence of an open ocular trauma that exposes the eye to external contamination. Clinical case: a 68-year-old male patient is reported to have redness, loss of vision and severe eye pain in the left eye. Conclusion: Endophthalmitis is a serious intraocular infection, with a risk of severe visual sequelae.

Keywords: orbital infection; conjunctivitis; serious visual lesions; endophthalmitis.
