Abstract

Introduction: Aseptic meningitis is a clinical syndrome characterized by inflammation of the meninges caused by unidentified non-bacterial pathogens in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Each year, the number of cases of viral meningitis exceeds the total number of cases caused by other causes. Viruses are the leading cause of meningitis in adults in the Western world, with enterovirus (EV), herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV) being the most common pathogens. However, the cause remains unclear in 50-60% of patients with suspected viral meningitis. Clinical Case: we report a 15-year-old male with a history of chickenpox for 8 days, general malaise accompanied by thermal rises, currently under outpatient treatment, and 48 hours ago a family member reported alteration of consciousness, which is the reason for his visit. Conclusion: given the potentially high morbidity associated with meningitis, early identification of the cause of meningitis is essential. In bacterial meningitis, early initiation of antibiotics is associated with better patient outcomes.
