Abstract

Cysticercosis caused by Taenia solium is a zoonosis of great importance in public health and animal production, which persists mainly in developing regions due to poor hygiene conditions and inadequate pig farming practices. The parasite, which involves humans as the definitive host and pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) as the intermediate host, causes significant economic losses and constitutes a priority epidemiological problem in rural areas. The objective of this research was to analyze the scientific evidence published between 2015 and 2024 on the prevalence of T. solium in pigs, its economic implications for pig production, and its impact on public health. To this end, a documentary-type investigation was carried out through a systematic search of databases such as PubMed, Scopus, SciELO, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science, using descriptors related to prevalence, risk factors, and disease control. The findings show remarkable heterogeneity in the prevalence of porcine cysticercosis worldwide. Rates of 0.86% were reported in Mexico, 2.78% in Peru, 4.51% in Brazil, and up to 57% in Zambia. In the Ecuadorian Andes, the figures ranged from 0.18% to 40%, with areas of high prevalence identified that had a considerable economic impact. In conclusion, the persistence of T. solium is related to factors such as extensive farming, poor hygiene, and limited veterinary control. Comprehensive strategies are focused on “health” as it is essential to reduce its prevalence and impact in endemic rural communities.
