Abstract

Diabetes is recognized as a major health problem with serious social and economic consequences for populations worldwide. Therefore, the importance of educating diabetic patients and their families has driven the development of specialized clinical nursing in diabetes. This review article aims to determine the experiences of caregivers of diabetic patients regarding treatment adherence in the parish of Las Mercedes, Olmedo canton, Manabí province, Ecuador. To achieve this, a quantitative methodology was employed, including a sample of 50 caregivers of patients with this condition. A structured survey was administered, and direct observations were conducted to gather information on the treatment and care conditions of the patients. The main results indicated that 94% of patients receive pharmacological treatment and 6% non-pharmacological treatment. Medication intake is highest in 44% of patients, with 26% taking it once a day and 10% taking it more than twice a day. Similarly, 46% always adhere to strict diets. Regarding treatment adherence, 28% comply, while 72% do not. The level of care is secondary in 40% of cases, primary in 36%, and tertiary in 24%. Finally, 30% have experienced frustration while caring for patients, 28% anxiety, 32% sadness, and 10% isolation. In conclusion, the caregivers' experience has not been positive, as patients have abandoned treatments or have not consistently followed the routines recommended by doctors, causing distress for their caregivers and families.
