RISK FACTORS AND RISK LEVELS FOR TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS USING FINDRISC IN ADULTS

Abstract

Objective: To determine the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus using the FINDRISC scale in adults without a previous diagnosis of the disease. Methodology: A quantitative, cross-sectional, analytical study was conducted using non-probabilistic convenience sampling. The population consisted of 266 adults aged 20 to 65 years who received care between September 2025 and January 2026. A data collection form and the Finnish Diabetes Risk Score —FINDRISC— scale were applied, considering sociodemographic, clinical, anthropometric, and lifestyle-related variables. Statistical analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel and Jamovi version 24.0, applying descriptive statistics and Spearman’s correlation. Results: The sample showed a balanced sex distribution, with a slight predominance of females at 50.8%. The mean age was 21.14 ± 1.37 years in men and 20.96 ± 1.64 years in women. Physical inactivity and family history of diabetes were present in 100% of the participants. Overweight or obesity was more frequent in men, whereas increased abdominal circumference predominated in women. According to FINDRISC, moderate risk was the most frequent category, followed by high risk. BMI and glucose levels showed positive and statistically significant correlations with the FINDRISC score, whereas sex showed no significant association. Conclusion: The FINDRISC scale made it possible to identify a moderate risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus in young adults, highlighting the need to strengthen preventive interventions focused on physical activity, weight control, glucose monitoring, and education on healthy lifestyles.
