Abstract

High blood pressure is a public health problem, especially among older adults, due to its chronic nature and the cardiovascular complications it can cause when left uncontrolled. Adherence to medication is essential for maintaining blood pressure levels and preventing complications. The objective of this study was to determine the level of adherence to pharmacological treatment among older adults with high blood pressure in the Huachi Grande parish (Central Region). The study employed a quantitative, descriptive approach with a field study design, using a sample of 30 older adults diagnosed with high blood pressure. A questionnaire was used to identify sociodemographic characteristics and treatment; adherence was also assessed using the Hill-Bone Hypertension Therapy Compliance Scale. The results showed a predominance of female participants, with 21 (70.0%), and the 80–89 age group, with 16 participants (53.3%). Regarding treatment, 19 participants (63.3%) were taking two medications, and the most commonly used drug was 100 mg of losartan, taken by 23 participants (76.67%). With regard to adherence, 20 participants (66.7%) showed poor adherence and 10 (33.3%) showed good adherence. At the final measurement, 14 participants (46.7%) had low blood pressure. It was concluded that poor adherence to medication was prevalent, highlighting the need to strengthen nursing interventions through health education, therapeutic follow-up, and periodic blood pressure monitoring.
