Abstract
Introduction: Older adults’ perceptions of nursing care represent an important component in assessing the care received in gerontological centers, as they encompass experiences related to interpersonal treatment, communication, autonomy, and responses to individual needs. Objective: To analyze older adults’ perceptions of the care provided by nursing staff in gerontological centers. Methodology: A systematic literature review was conducted following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The search was performed in PubMed, SciELO, and ScienceDirect using descriptors related to older adults, nursing care, and perceptions of care. Scientific studies focused on older adults receiving care in gerontological centers were included. The methodological quality of the selected studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools. Results: The studies showed that older adults primarily value individualized, respectful care adapted to their preferences. Communication with staff, opportunities to be heard, participation in decisions, and maintaining a certain degree of autonomy contributed to a better care experience. Physical, psychological, social, emotional, spiritual, and safety needs were also identified as relevant components of care. Limited staff time, insufficient resources, and certain institutional routines restricted opportunities for personalized care and residents’ participation in everyday activities. Conclusions: Favorable perceptions of nursing care depend on person-centered approaches that recognize each resident’s individual needs and preferences. Strengthening communication, respecting autonomy, encouraging participation, and adapting nursing care to individual circumstances can contribute to improving older adults’ experiences and the quality of care provided within gerontological centers.
