CONGENITAL INGUINAL HERNIA COMPLICATED BY INCARCERATION AND INTESTINAL PERFORATION IN A 1-YEAR-OLD MALE PATIENT: CASE REPORT

Abstract

Congenital inguinal hernia is one of the most frequent reasons for surgical consultation in pediatrics. Although most cases are reducible and managed electively, incarceration can progress to strangulation, ischemia, and, in exceptional situations, intestinal perforation. We present the case of a 1-year-old male patient who presented with abdominal distension, vomiting, and fever, associated with a non-reducible right inguinoscrotal swelling. Abdominal radiography suggested intestinal obstruction, and complementary tests showed anemia and an inflammatory response. An emergency exploratory laparotomy was performed, revealing a loop of intestine compromised within the hernial sac, with signs of hypoperfusion and perforation, as well as intraperitoneal inflammatory fluid. Intestinal repair and right inguinal herniorrhaphy were performed. The patient recovered favorably, with a short stay in intensive care and discharged with scheduled follow-up appointments. This case underscores the need to recognize the signs of complicated inguinal hernia early and prioritize urgent surgical intervention to prevent potentially serious complications (1,2,3).
