USE OF ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND ITS ASSOCIATION WITH SLEEP DISORDERS AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN ADOLESCENTS

Abstract
The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between the use of electronic devices, sleep disorders, and academic performance among 11th-grade students at the Domingo F. Sarmiento Educational Unit. This research was conducted because the use of cell phones, computers, and other devices has become part of students’ daily lives, especially at night, which may influence their sleep habits and academic performance. The study employed a quantitative approach with a descriptive-correlational scope and a non-experimental cross-sectional design. Sixty students participated, selected through non-probabilistic convenience sampling. To collect the data, a previously validated structured questionnaire was administered, which achieved a reliability coefficient of α = 0.88. The data were organized and analyzed using Microsoft Excel and SPSS. Among the main findings, 60.0% of the students reported always using electronic devices before bedtime, while 33.3% used them for more than two hours. Additionally, 33.3% reported sometimes having difficulty falling asleep, and 31.7% reported feeling tired during the day. Regarding academic performance, 30.0% of the students considered it good, although some difficulties related to concentration, completing assignments, and falling asleep during class were also observed. In conclusion, the results show that frequent and prolonged use of electronic devices at night may be associated with changes in sleep habits and may affect academic performance.
