Abstract

Cortisol is a hormone that responds to stress and changes according to the sleep-wake cycle, so it can affect the quality of rest. The aim of the research was to measure cortisol levels in the blood and see how they relate to sleep quality in adults aged 19 to 32. a non-experimental, observational, descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional study was carried out with 32 participants. The OMEGA Clinical Laboratory processed the blood samples with the ichroma ™ II analyzer and the ichroma ™ Cortisol assay, which uses a fluorescence immunoassay. The study assessed sleep quality with a ten-question dichotomous survey, based on the Pittsburgh sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and adjusted to the study´s objectives. The survey explored sleep duration and difficulties falling asleep. The results indicated that thirty participants, 94 %, had cortisol values within the normal range, and two participants, 6 % had altered cortisol levels. Regarding sleep, 71,88% say that stress bothers their rest. 68,75% use electronic devices before going to bed. 68.75% also report that poor sleep affects their concentration and mood. 37,50% think their sleep is bad or not restorative. It is concluded that there are factors that disrupt sleep even within the normal range, highlighting the importance of maintaining good sleep habits in this adult population studied.
